Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest, behind the breastbone. Heartburn is usually worse when lying down or arching. So, most people wonder how to get rid of heartburn quickly?

Occasionally heartburn is common and does not cause alarms. Most people can manage the discomfort of heartburn themselves with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter medications.

Heartburn more often interfering with daily routine may be symptoms of something more serious, requiring help from a doctor.

Causes of heartburn and heartburn

Heartburn occurs when stomach acid gets into the esophagus.

Usually when swallowed, the lower esophageal sphincter – a circle of muscle around the bottom of the esophagus – relaxes to allow food and fluids to flow down the stomach. Then it closes.

However, if the lower esophageal sphincter is abnormally dilated or weakened, stomach acid can flow back into the esophagus, causing heartburn. The acid backup is worse when leaning down or lying down.
