Many people often ask Google, is how to get rid of the fishy smell after cooking. I think it is more about how to buy fish that doesn’t smell or how to fry it so that it will produce a less fishy smell. Cooks are concerned that smells from the fish will linger in our kitchen or spread into other parts of our home. Some things will help minimize odors from cooking fish, and we are sharing them here.
Start with fresh fish
Most importantly, buy the newest and best-handled fish you could. Find a fishmonger that you do trust and ask them questions about the fish. Clean, raw fish should smell sweet and briny. Only old or poorly handled fish will feel fishy.
Choose the right type of fish
The kind of fish you are cooking makes a big difference in terms of smell. Oily fishes like mackerel, sardines, and bluefish will have stronger cooking smells than leaner fishes such as flounder, snapper, and hake. So, How to Identify Spoiled Food Or Not?
Consider your cooking method
Different cooking methods produce differing amounts of cooking odors. If you are worried about a lingering smell, try methods like poaching, steaming, and braising for cooking fish as they will produce fewer odors. Frying, sauteing, and pan-roasting make more smells as they release more fat particles into the air. If you have a pretty exhaust fan above your range, use it and turn it up.
Consider some ingredients to get rid of the fishy smell
Lemon and vinegar
Lemons and vinegar are beneficial ingredients in removing the fishy smell. You cut a slice of lemon and then squeeze the water onto the fish meat, for about a few minutes after processing, lemon juice absorbed into the fish will help the fish taste better. It will not only help remove the fishy smell but is also helpful for catfish to remove mucus from the skin.
Alternatively, you can mix vinegar and water in a ratio of 1: 1, then apply on the surface of the fish. This method effectively removes the fishy smell. Fish after being used vinegar and fried, the fishy smell will disappear completely.
Ginger when purchased, smashing and slicing. Then, soak in water with fish for about 5 minutes. Ginger is beneficial in eliminating fishy smells and also adds flavor to your dishes.
Salt and wine
You take salt mixed with water and then prepare the fish to soak for about 10 minutes. Or you can rub salt on the fish body, then scab and clean the fish. Using salt can make fish less viscous and deodorize effectively. Finally, rinse the fish with water before processing it.
You can also soak the fish in wine diluted with water for about 15 minutes and then rinse with clean water, the fishy odor of the fish is also significantly reduced.
One way that many homemakers apply when deodorizing fish is to use aromatic spices to marinate when preparing fish such as ginger, garlic, star anise, pepper. This way not only Deodorizes the fishy effect but also adds flavor to your fish dish.
- Preliminary processing: Need to remove lap, gill, flake, cut fins and remove the black membrane in the abdomen.

Our fingers and hands pick up the smell of fish when you are preparing and cooking it. Then, rub salt over your hands, but not if you have cuts and nicks. The salt sting usually is worse than the fish odor. Lemon or any citrus, baking soda, or washing with a bar of strong dish soap and water should refresh your hands.
